Occasionally, the unstoppable trend machine that is TikTok churns out workout hacks that pique our curiosity. Are popular routines like the 12-3-30 and 25-7-2 actually beneficial? Check out what we found when investigating the viral workouts taking over #FitTok, then use your COAC gym membership to put them to the test!

Foolproof & Accessible

Social media influencer, Lauren Giraldo, shared her 12-3-30 treadmill workout on TikTok in 2020. Almost overnight, it garnered 12 million views and counting. It seems Lauren had tapped into the need for simple, approachable workouts that were challenging enough to make a difference but not so difficult that they were intimidating. And the 12-3-30 formula delivers just that; hop on the treadmill, set your incline to 12 and the speed to 3, and walk for 30 minutes. Giraldo claims to have lost 30 lbs by doing this combination five times weekly.

We have to admit; this is a great, low-impact workout that checks the cardio box while also building muscles in the glutes, hamstrings, and calves. That said, it’s a fairly strenuous routine that should be eased into. Mix your daily walk with core exercises that support balance and stability. Otherwise, you risk straining your lower back.

Lauren’s resulting weight loss is inspiring, but try to manage your expectations. You can’t out-walk an unhealthy diet. So, if shedding a few pounds is your goal, stick to meals that reflect that.

Another thing we love about the 12-3-30 routine? You can zone out by watching a show or listening to a podcast!

Step It Up a Notch

The 25-7-2 Stairmaster workout seems easy enough at first glance: Program the intensity level to 7 and climb for 25 minutes two days a week. No sweat, right? Wrong. While this routine is easier on your joints than the 12-3-30 workout, it’s arguably more demanding because you’re using your body weight for resistance. You may be cursing gravity at minute 5, but you can rejoice that you’re getting a great cardio session. Because this routine requires some focus and coordination, you can’t really lose yourself in a podcast. However, the upside is you’ll be activating your core and glues to stay balanced!

Word to the Wise

When it comes to TikTok, proceed with caution. Depending on the social platform for health and wellness, advice doesn’t always yield answers backed by credentialed professionals. While these #FitTok exercises may be straightforward, it doesn’t mean you’ll ace them immediately.

Do gentle stretches before and after. If you’re struggling, decrease the incline or break the routine into intervals. Focus on maintaining excellent posture throughout, even if you need to slow down or stop at the ten-minute mark. Ultimately, protecting yourself from injury is more important than burning calories, and you can always work your way up to completing the original workouts.
