Thanks to the beautiful climate in Santa Barbara, we’re able to offer our swim programs year round! For both members and non-members of all ages, we offer private swim lessons taught by experienced instructors. For ages 5 – 18, we also offer varying levels of Swim Team that allow kids to learn the basics of the four competitive strokes then progressively move up in the team and swim competitively at monthly meets.
Swim Team Levels & Schedules
Pre-Swim ages 5 – 8
The Pre-Swim team focuses on preparing children who already know how to swim unassisted for the Novice team by helping them become proficient in the four competitive strokes – freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Diving, flip turns, and open turns are introduced. Teams are divided according to skill level in order to maintain low swimmer to coach ratio.
Monday – Friday in recreational pool, 3:30 – 4:00 pm
Novice ages 7 – 12
The Novice team trains on the fundamentals of the four competitive strokes. Technique is improved through regular swim sets and drills. Racing starts, turns, and finishes are progressively taught, building on what they’ve learned in Pre-Swim. Novice also attends USA Swim Meets once a month for anyone on the team wanting to compete.
Monday – Friday in lap pool, 3:30 – 4:15 pm
Age Group ages 9 – 18
The Age Group team is for advanced swimmers. Children must be able to complete at least one length in each stroke, know their open turns and underwater streamlines, as well as do track start and flip turns. This team trains in all four of the competitive strokes with an emphasis on fine-tuning technique, building endurance, and increasing speed through regular swim sets. Age Group also attends USA Swim Meets once a month for anyone on the team wanting to compete.
Monday – Friday in lap pool, 4:15 – 5:30 pm
Age and ability are both taken into consideration when placing your child into a team.

Each swim lesson is customized to your skills and abilities and includes a private swim instructor assigned based on your swim needs. Every swim instructor at Cathedral Oaks Athletic Club is highly qualified with backgrounds in competitive swimming, water polo, or triathlons, and they use their experience and knowledge of swimming to teach proper stroke technique and water safety skills for all levels. All lessons are 30 minutes long and are set up as once weekly standing appointments with an instructor.
